Originally recorded in June 2020, My best friend and I (since 2009) have a conversation about race. Even though we were both army brats we had wildly different school and home education around race and racism.

Labeling is often our way of making sense of the world. One of the things we often label is each other. Sometimes it is for encouragement or to make that person feel good about themselves. Other times it is to discourage a behavior or used as a way to “other” people. Regardless of the intent of labeling children, ourselves, and others often fall short of our goal. In this episode, I discuss the impact labels often have and what we can do instead of label.

On our journey today we will be questioning how the thoughts you have around gender affect the way you parent your kiddos.

Since the start of quarantine what was normal has changed for so many of us. It’s honestly a struggle coping through these times. In this episode I hold space for the changes are hardships this has brought everyone.

All my life I've been living this bubble of equality and colorblindness. That bubble has officially popped. I actually think it popped when my 4-year-old was born I've just been holding on to the past. As he gets older it becomes harder to hold on to and it's time I finally let go and face reality.

With the current state of the U.S., I wanted to have conversations around race with my mom that I hadn’t had before. We start off with information that was very new to me, What it was like for my grandmother coming to the U.S. from Panama in the late sixties. We also talk about what it was like for her to be the oldest of all of her siblings. I hope you enjoy the beginning part of our conversation.
